Chandni Chowk in Delhi India

Delhi is one of the metropolis which is known for its lively culture, people and colourful bazaars and markets. Though the capital is filled with amazing and busy markets, like Sarojini Nagar market, Janpath, Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bagh, but Chadni Chowk has always retained its special place for itself in the hearts of the Delhites since the Mughal period.

Located within the old city of Shahjahanabad, built by Mughul emperor Shahjahan, Chandni Chowk symbolizes the good life and zeal that Delhi is known for. Even though today, when the last remaining of the old city struggle to exist, Chandni Chowk manages to preserve its old charm, and is still held as one of the highlights of tourism in New Delhi. It is a place which is dedicated to trading, shopping and eating delicious food items.

The history of Chandni Chowk dates back too old days when Shahjahanabad existed. It is believed that the shopping arcade was planned by the favourite daughter of Shahjahan, named Jahanara in 1650. The line of shops touch the edge of Red Fort and the central pool was always the centre of attraction for all. It is believed that the reflection of the full moon in this pool gave this street its name, as the translation of moonlight in Hindi is called chandni. Gradually with time, as the number of shops grew, Chandni Chowk became a thriving business hub, with all the necessities for the people of Delhi. The variety of food available here today is the main source of attraction of Chandni Chowk in New Delhi. Parathe wali gali is one of the famous spots, where every other person, whether he is young or old, rich or poor, would love to visit in the morning and have a borne appetite of hot paranthas there.

Situated opposite the Red Fort, Chandani Chowk houses the Digambar Jain Temple, Fatehpuri Mosque, built by the wives of Shah Jahan - and Sunheri Masjid.
